The
Lagoon’s Flora and Fauna
It is remarkable the presence of some plants
adapted to growing in saline environment.
Other types of plants, such as the Mediterranean
shrub, some intensive cultures, monocultures
and freshwater reed beds grow within the Lagoon
influence area. These plants are the basis
of an echosystem where various animal species
and, avobe all aquatic birds live together.
The Lagoon houses the biggest colony of flamingos
in the whole Iberian Peninsula, and the second
one in Europe. Moreover, it is a wintering
place and a migratory way for numerous species
of aquatic birds, some of them in danger of
extintion, some of them legally protected. |
Fiestas
Schedule
The Fuente de Piedra’s fiestas schedule
begins in February, the 1st and the 2nd, with
the La Candelaria saint’s day. Later,
the Carnival occupies the village streets
with its masked crowd. Afterwards, the second
Sunday of May the municipality decks out for
the traditional Nuestra Señora de las
Virtudes Procession. In July or August, depending
on the flamingo’s hibernation and breeding
season, a festival takes place to mark the
ringing of the new birds in the Fuente de
Piedra Lagoon. Flounces and sevillanas and
verdiales dances arrive with the Summer Fair,
taking place between july the 22th and the
25th, while on september the 7th and 8th the
Patron Saint’s Day in honor of Nuestra
Señora de las Virtudes Virgin takes
place. Among this day’s typical activities
is the ribbon horse-racing (carrera de cintas
a caballo) – in which the horseriders
have to snag a ribbon with a stick, of National
